Party on dudes. Oy. Sell em in May. Hmm. Large number of up signals. Early, watch and alert. Have to see if the party continues.

I have not had a lot of time to work on the market. I wanted to bail from using Reuters because of cost and lack of what I got for the price I paid. So, I have been spending time looking for a new data vendor. Wasted a couple of days on a freebie and then gave up and got a software program.
So far so good. They are: http://www.1free-historical-stock-quotes-downloader.com/
Once I get things settled in I should have more time to scroll through the charts and organize things in a much better manner.

Huge number of early up signals. Almost at the point of getting out of hand. A large number of green up alerts and only a small number of orange down alerts.

Reaching the point of having to put together a mind map or a flow chart of the signals to clear up what I am looking at. Counter signals sometimes add to the confusion. Will look into doing this in the next few days.

Green up alerts and orange down alerts may as well be equal in number. Maybe more evidence of a market deciding on which direction to go. There are far more up early signals than down early ones but the down watch list is fairly long compared with up watch list. Oy, spin the wheel and guess where the ball will land. Up, down, sideways....

Hello and welcome to my blog.

Perhaps the early signal is getting a bit out of hand. Three columns of 'up early' signals. Maybe too much to keep track of. Will have to see if this is kept in the future. The crayons are fun but can be messy and distracting.

More familiar is that there are fair number of green up alerts versus the orange down alerts.

Up, down, all around. This is maybe an indication of a churning trying to decide market. Certainly the market is up well from the March lows but it is still a long way down from last autumn. When I get the time I will take a look at the weekly charts to try and get a sense of the lay of the land. Forest not trees.

Hello and welcome to my blog.

Despite the Dow heading up today there are still a fair number of orange down alerts versus only a few green up alerts. The problem with all the alerts is the sheer number that come along. There are two columns of 'up early' signals, just wiggling and whipsawing or showing what will transpire in the future. Right now, as in many other times, do not know. Still trying to figure out if it is worthwhile to post the 'early' signal or not.

Seems to be a crossroads period right now. Move down and test support at the breakout levels and then move even higher or break through support and head lower. The third option being a sideways churn to keep everyone guessing. Have to see what happens.

Thank you for your time.

EE17 Chart Example WYN

Hello and welcome to my blog.

The following chart is WYN. This is not a recommendation to buy or sell this stock. Due diligence is your responsibility. If you need professional investment advice then find a professional.

I can not seem to put the crayons away so here is another chart example.

These examples are very much cherry picking to hopefully provide clarity to the signals presented in the spreadsheets. I have seen this sort of pattern appear in many different charts so it becomes the pattern to look for. EARLY...WATCH...ALERT...then confirming or denying evidence. As I scroll through my list of charts I quickly move past the ones that do not demonstrate what I am looking for. At times the list of what to watch becomes overwhelming. Like looking for one of many needles in a haystack and not even being sure the one found is the right one. Gheez. No one said it was going to be easy.

Thank you for your time.

EE16 Chart Example AES

Hello and welcome to my blog.

The following chart is AES. This is not a recommendation to buy or sell this stock. Due diligence is your responsibility. If you need professional investment advice then find a professional.

The box of crayons came out once again and the following chart of AES is the result. The hope is to clarify the technical signals I use. EARLY...WATCH...ALERT. Then other evidence to either confirm or deny the action to be taken. With AES a basic resistance level at 7.00 was broken to confirm an entry. Of course looking back is always easy. "If my aunt had balls."

I hope this example clarifies instead of confuses.

EE15 Chart Example RFMD

Hello and welcome to my blog.

The following chart is RFMD. This is not a recommendation to buy or sell this stock. Due diligence is your responsibility. If you need professional investment advice then find a professional.

The box of crayons came out and the following chart is the result. The chart is an example of the signal sequence of EARLY...WATCH...ALERT that worked fairly well. Of course there are tons of times when this has not been the case. I hope the chart is relatively self explanatory.

Currently RFMD is signalling a down decision time meaning that it would make sense to pay attention to any confirming evidence that a down move is in the offing. Only time will tell and will have to wait to see what happens.

Thank you for your time.

Hello and welcome to my blog.

Again a small change to the spreadsheet with a couple of more columns added. This is a work in progress so I will have to see whether these stay or not. The new columns are up or down signals that are extremely early and subject to greater whipsaw than the other ones used.

The intention of this whole exercise is to develop a lead-in to an entry point. The ideal sequence being...earliest signal...watch signal...alert signal. As the sequence develops there should be enough evidence to confirm of deny a hard entry.

Today there are no up watch signals and no green up alert signals. Plenty of down signals though. The watch down signals are actually less than the orange down alert signals. Will have to see if the downward bias picks up steam.

The spreadsheet link for EE14 is below. This is not a recommendation to buy or sell any of the stocks listed. Due diligence is your responsibility. If you need professional investment advice then find a professional.

A very long list of orange down alerts and only three green up alerts. My guess is that the large number of orange down alerts can be traced back to the large number of 'watch down' signals over the last few days.

Like the last few days the number of 'watch down' signals is large, two columns worth, and only two 'watch up' signals. Whether these develop into future orange down alerts is yet to be seen.

Time permitting I will try and provide a couple of more chart examples over the next couple of days. Both good and bad ones.

EE12 Chart Signal Example QLGC

Hello and welcome to my blog.

The following chart is QLGC. This is not a recommendation to buy or sell this stock. Due diligence is your responsibility. If you need professional investment advice then find a professional.

Just a quick chart example of the new 'watch' signal being used along with the 'alert' signal.
The 'watch' is just that, watch to see what happens. The ideal is for this to lead into the 'alert' signal. Ha Ha Ha, lots of examples of when it does not work, please remember this is just an example of when it worked.

If not too fuzzy to see there is a 'watch' down arrow at the end of March which did not develop into an 'alert'. After some sideways movement the price continued the initial up move.

At present the recent 'down watch' has developed into a 'down alert'. Will have to wait and see what happens in the next couple of weeks.

Of course this is not a magic bullet, just a way to view the market. What I do enjoy is that once the 'watch' signal occurs there is usually some time to see how the price action develops as it moves towards a possible 'alert' signal. During this time it is possible to apply other criteria to either confirm or deny the possible future signal. Call it lead in time to a potential move.

Enough for now. Chart created with MetaStock.

Thank you for your time.

As mentioned yesterday the number of 'watch' signals tends to be more than the 'alert' signals. Today the number of 'watch' stocks are split into two columns because of this.

Right now there are a lot of both orange down alerts and watch for down signals. Whether this means that the market is headed for a down move can only be answered by the market itself. My guess is that a down move is in the offing. As always have to see what happens.

EE11 Spreadsheet Link CHANGE

Hello and welcome to my blog.

The spreadsheet link for EE11 is below. This is not a recommendation to buy or sell any of the stocks listed. Due diligence is your responsibility. If you need professional investment advice then find a professional.

The spreadsheet has changed a little bit from the previous ones. As well as the green up alerts and orange down alerts, there are two other columns called 'watch'. As the name implies these are watch only stocks and not full alerts. There are a greater number of stocks generated by 'watch' because it is a faster signal. The number of false signals are also greater, remember it is only a 'watch' signal and not a fuller pay greater attention 'alert'. No prices are included with this new version and this may change in the future as I get more comfortable with the mechanics of creating the lists.

I am still working out the details of how to present the data and how I can keep it all in order. I will have to see how it all comes together. The underlying intention is to keep a watch on the 'watch' signals and whether the stock has the ability to develop into a full on 'alert' signal. Perhaps I can work something out in excel or simply print the daily alerts and keep this as a play book to refer to.

The other option I have is to simply scroll through the list of stocks and look for the signals manually. Takes a bit of time but keeps it all up front on a daily basis.

Once I get a little more time I will post a couple of chart examples of the 'watch' signal and how it can develop into an 'alert' signal. As well I will post a couple of charts of when it does not develop into an 'alert' signal. None of this is magic or a silver bullet, just some guy trying to figure it out and beat the odds. Off to scroll through the charts.

A sea of green up alerts. Only four orange down alerts. Party on.

Dow clearing 8100 with some authority. Have to look for the next place for a possible stall out.
Threes would say...8400, 8700, 9000, etc. On a rough measure, without peeking, low was about 6600, up to 8100 would be 1500 points. 8100 added to 1500 gives...9600. No one knows if the Dow has the legs to make it that far, except the Dow.

The old saying is "Sell em in May and go away." Old sayings stick around for a reason and will have to wait to see if this occurs this year. Perhaps the rally is so the "They" can sell out to the "them".

Played around a little more with MetaStock and just ended up with pretty lines and arrows. Not much good. When it is all said and done it comes down to Price, Time, and Volume. I have to get back to that thought mode since anything else is just fartin around and avoiding the reality of trading. Aiming to return to the basics and execute the plan. Da da da.

DD28 ADCT MetaStock Chart

Hello and welcome to my blog.

This is just a quick test to see what the MetaStock chart looks like here. Oh the fuzzy chart. Click to enlarge but still fuzzy. Hmm. I will have to check into creating a non-fuzzy chart.

The following chart is of ADCT. This is not a recommendation to buy or sell this stock. Due diligence is your responsibility. If you need professional investment advice then find a professional.

This is the new picture that I now gaze upon. Must be careful not to become just a 'chart gazer' and also not to get trapped into thinking that MetaStock somehow holds the holy grail. Endless hours of coding and looking for just the perfect indicator. Learned long ago there is no such thing.

The ribbon at the bottom shows the information from the indicator. Orange down, green up, and gray for neutral. The price colors match the ribbon colors except when neutral, which are depicted as red for down and black for up. Very basic.

With "If my aunt had b-lls, she would be my uncle." in mind this would have been a good trade. If only if. The move from near the start of March until now is from about 3.50 to over 6. Not bad at all. Again, if only if.

My general goal is to work out a method for pulling out the situations where the color change is from orange to gray to green. Easy to say. Since I am still on the learning curve the details are still in the gelling state. It is also late so stuff will just have to wait until later.

MetaStock EOD was used to create the chart.

I had a chance to climb a little higher on the learning curve with MetaStock. A few snags along with a few aha's. I still find the program kind of clunky, if that makes sense. Anyways, once I can cruise around with ease I plan to switch over to a signal that is slightly faster than the Alert.
It does produce a lot more signals and I will have to work out a way in which to streamline the procedures.

DD20 Change to MetaStock

Hello and welcome to my blog.

I finally upgraded my ancient version of MetaStock at the end of last week. This means I am back on a bit of a relearning curve. Really like their program even if I still find it a bit clunky. Anyways, will have to spend the next couple of weeks of spare time getting used to the new version.

Right now I am still using Wealth-lab off the web for scans and then entry into Excel. For now it is quicker to use the familiar than work out the new. So a little bit of double time to be spent ramping up and getting used to the MetaStock scanner and which buttons to push. I figure it will be pretty easy in about a week or so. Will put up a couple of charts when it is all said and done.

Only 2 green up alerts and a handful of orange down alerts.

For the Dow 8100 has so far set up as an upside resistance number. The longer term 81 day moving average also came into play near the 8100 level. Only a couple of days since turned away from this level and anything can happen. See what the future brings.

More green up alerts showing up and only a couple of orange down alerts. Thanks to the Gummy data download program the closing price is back in the spreadsheet. Nice because it provides an easy reference when back checking how well the signals have done.

I spent a bit of time looking at the other Gummy spreadsheets. In the modern world most would be considered old school. Available now in most online charting stuff. However it still has some interesting things to look at and makes you think instead of just clicking a couple of buttons. I hope to find some time to play with what he has provided and possibly incorporate it into what I am trying to do.

I am still stuck on signal tracking though and will go back to trying to find a solution. The up green alerts and orange down alerts are relatively easy to follow. They do not generate a lot of whipsaw signals. However the other signal I use, which is faster, generates a few too many whipsaws to follow without becoming overwhelming. My goal is to be able to track the watch signals with an eye towards when they move into the alert mode. I am sure there is a spreadsheet solution out there but I am still searching for it. Just another something to keep me busy and out of trouble.

Thank you for your time.

DD03 THANK YOU GUMMY (data grabber)

Hello and welcome to my blog.

Thank you Gummy.

I went looking for a new way to get daily data and discovered the following site. http://www.gummy-stuff.org/Yahoo-data.htm After a couple of tries I worked out how to get the data from Yahoo into the format I wanted. Thank you Gummy for providing such a beautiful excel spreadsheet.

Then I went looking at the other spreadsheets he has generously provided. The link is...
http://www.gummy-stuff.org/index.htm WOW. About one third down and on the left look for the 'chart' icon. This links to about 150 different spreadsheets. WOW. I have only had the time to marvel at the work that went into building these and the generosity to put them on the net. There are at least 5 of them that I plan to examine in detail, if not for other commitments I would be in front of this screen all weekend. I do not know if the ones I look at will be any good or not, I am simply looking forward to the adventure of playing with them. I sense though that there is some very valuable material buried inside them.

Thank you Gummy.

Thank you for your time.

I went surfing around looking for a new data provider. Found a site that has excel templates for the market. Will have to work them out on my own and get it all working. Some other interesting things on the site. I will post the link when I get some time.

Color me WRONG. Dang. All green up alerts. Call it a bear ball busting rally. Ouch.

The next overhead resistance level for the Dow is 8100. Have to see if this is the one that holds it all down. Would also mean that everyone is on board with their party hats. For now it seems, "Party on Garth, party on Wayne." Oy.

For my own blindness I have been confusing the economy with the stock market. Doom on the economy side coloring my view of the markets. Should have just looked at a green up alert on the Dow last week and said, the market is not the economy. Oh well. Tomorrow will arrive as always and will face the day with a smile.

CC21 SPX Chart

Hello and welcome to my blog.

Chart of the SPX. I figured I should use the SPX to be more modern. It seems to have become the index of choice for more and more people to follow. Looks a lot like the Dow chart which is sort of considered passe.

Just a few lines as guesses towards the future. Over the 18 day moving average recently, but held under the 54 day moving average. Only a move above the 81 day moving average would signal a possible major trend reversal. I do not see that happening soon. Patience as always.

Note as well that the drawn lines are pretty close to nine (three) numbers. 675, 750, 810. Love the nines, thank you Dongoro.

As always, only the future knows the future.

Thank you for your time.

The chart depicted is not a recommendation to buy or sell this stock (index). Due diligence is your responsibility. If you need professional investment advice then find a professional.

CC21 DOW Chart

Hello and welcome to my blog.

Just a Dow chart update with a couple of lines. 7500 as possible resistance and 8100 as a nine squared number. No magic; just numbers.

Also, Dow above the 18 day moving average, good if it can hold above. But below 54 day moving average, bad if it can not get above this. See what happens.

I will not get positive about the Dow until it actually moves above the longer term 81 day moving average. Patience, patience, patience, since this is not likely to happen for awhile.

Green, green, green. More green up alerts, no orange down alerts. How far can the pendulum swing? It has certainly moved into a maxed out area.

Dow paused at 7500 with a down day today. I will stick with my guess that the market is headed lower. If the market is designed to give the most people the maximum amount of pain, then it is setting up to hurt all the folks now on board and the bears that have now thrown in the towel. See what happens.

Dow moves upward to 7500. This was the breakdown level a little while ago. Have to see if it sets up as resistance. Green up alert on the Dow and the SPX. Hmm. Bumping into the longer term moving averages though. I have the towel in the air but still can not throw it in. Just call it cognitive dissonance on my part. Of course only the market is right. The spreadsheet link for CC17 is below. This is not a recommendation to buy or sell any of the stocks listed. Due diligence is your responsibility. If you need professional investment advice then find a professional.

Even more green up alerts. Only one orange down alert.

The market is very often a cruel master/mistress. For the last few days I have thought/guessed that the Dow would hit a resistance ceiling and start moving back down. This has not happened. The next guess would be that the 7500 level becomes overhead resistance. Wait and see.

It often seems that as a guess gets further away from being right that thoughts of throwing in the towel rise. Then just as the towel is thrown in the market turns and the guess turns out to be right. About now I feel like throwing in the towel. So maybe it is just about time for the market to turn back down. As always the only reality will be what the market does. How I think and feel does not matter a whit to what transpires. Tomorrow never knows.

The question is whether this is just a dead cat bounce or the real thing. I suspect the former and have an eye out for overhead resistance.

Given all the green up alerts it would be worthwhile to scroll through all the charts looking for the "friendly" ones. These being the ones now above their 18 day moving averages and then looking for a test. I will try and find the time to scroll through the charts and maybe post what looks interesting.

Very slim pickings.

Just a guess on my part about the future but I really think that 6400 is in the cards for the Dow. I thought about it over the weekend and figure that since it is a square than it will probably happen. Not a magic number or any of that such stuff. Just sort of one of those strange things that come to be. Will have to wait and see what happens.

Years ago I came across the following in a newspaper and liked the thoughts behind it. Kept it all these years. It applies to historians but can be used in any situation that makes you feel that the world is out of control and nothing but trouble is in the future.

"Civilization is a stream with banks. The stream is sometimes filled with blood from people killing, stealing, shouting, and doing the things historians usually record; while on the banks, unnoticed, people build homes, make love, raise children, sing songs, write poetry, and even whittle statues. The story of civilization is the story of what happened on the banks. Historians are pessimists because they ignore the banks for the river." Will Durant

Should have also mentioned yesterday that 7500 may become overhead resistance on the Dow as well as the 7800 level. Series numbers to watch: 8100, 7800, 7500, 7200, 6900, 6600, 6300. Simply 300 point steps. Can also place 6400 in there since it is the next square down from 8100. Not hard numbers but simply guides to watch. Never perfect, never will be. Dow basically regained the loses from yesterday. I still do not trust any up move to be sustained for long. Maybe the up today was in hope of the President saving the world. Good luck. Color me all orange down alerts. Not a single green up alert. I thought there might be more of the orange today given the move down, but then figured that pretty much everything has already signaled over the last few days and weeks. Not a lot left standing.

"Boom, boom, out go the lights." Ted Nugent I think.

If my guess of the Dow heading to around 6300 to 6400 becomes a reality then there are some points to watch for pauses along the way. Easy to figure out, all nines and all ~300 point down levels. 7500, (been there) 7200, (there now) 6900, (maybe) 6600, (maybe) 6300,(maybe). Just some levels to keep in mind in case the down move continues. Wiggles and twists are to be expected and no one knows if this is what the future holds.

A second day with lots of orange down alerts. Short term perhaps the pendulum has swung to far. Extremes do not last. Maybe a dead kitten bounce in the next couple of days.

Call it a line in the sand for the Dow at 7500. A nice spinning candle something today. Since so many folks are looking at this level it has become important. It will not be a pretty sight if there is a breakdown through 7500. If it does hold watch for previous support to become resistance.

If a break down occurs my guess at the future would be a Dow around 6300 to 6400. Ouch. This is a very rough measure of the recent support and resistance levels. 6300 is a nine number while 6400 is a square. Remember this is just a guess and no one knows. To use a quip by Art Cashin, "it will happen at 10:30 Tuesday".

Personally I think that too many things are wrong with the big picture stuff for a positive resolution of the markets. My expectations are for more down. Of course the market will do whatever it wants in the future. As always it will be an interesting game to watch.

Thank you for your time.

Get out the orange crayon. A fair number of orange down alerts, only 2 green up alerts. Given a close to 300 point drop in the Dow this is not really a surprise.

How low can you go? Last Dow low in November of last year around 7500, today a close near 7500. Another 9 number showing up. Love the nines. A question now of whether a second stand can be made at this level. Retest or break down. No one knows. As always it will be interesting to see what the future brings.

Thank you for your time.

Hmmm. Last hour recovery of the Dow. Long legged candle pattern that will stick out on the charts. I am skeptical. Trust only your own thinking.

About even between green up alerts and orange down alerts. Dow world plumbing recent low levels. Have to wait and see if the lower levels hold. If a breakdown occurs then 7500 might be in the cards. Will have to wait and see.

Some pause. Orange down alerts return. Not as many as I thought would show up with the Dow down close to 400 points. "And the beat goes on." Sonny and Cher.

Color me green up alerts. Only two orange down alerts. Have a feeling that it is time for a pause. Bumping into the longer term moving averages. May be overhead resistance. It is going to take some time for the longer term moving averages to change to a moving upward bias.

Thank you for your time.

BB03 Deleverage Article

Hello and welcome to my blog.

Each month I read the free post at http://www.contraryinvestor.com/mo.htm, this morning was no different and as usual it was informative. Perhaps I liked this months article a lot because it said what I wanted to hear. Validation of ones beliefs always sound good. Essentially it talks about how it will take a fairly long time to deleverage the leverage out of the economy. A quote from the article follows and you can hit the link to read the whole thing, complete with charts. Thank you Contraryinvestor.

Thank you for your time.

"In summation, debt growth throughout the broad US economy, exclusive of the asset backed securities markets (that is in clear deleveraging mode) and the Federal government (that is in clear leverage acceleration mode), has only slowed, but not gone into net contraction. As per the nearer term directional trends seen in the charts above, it appears households and the non-financial corporate sector are either in or will enter the process of net leverage contraction (deleveraging) very soon. Consumption, production and price deflation trends in a number of asset classes (primarily residential real estate and equities) has occurred up to this point against a backdrop of only slowing household and corporate debt growth. Just what will happen if/when household and non-financial corporate leverage begins to actually contract in nominal terms? THAT’s the key question for us as investors over the quarters directly ahead. The markets have priced in sector implosion (financial sector) and the potential for a recession of a mid-1970’s/early 1980’s magnitude. But, the broad deleveraging process has really just begun. We have a very hard time seeing this process truncated in the quarters ahead. The potential clearly exists for a multi-year reconciliation process. Have the markets already priced in a multi-year deleveraging process, with specific emphasis and implications as per consumers? That we do not believe has happened, except maybe in the Treasury market. You already know we will be monitoring and discussing these very issues as we move forward. Deleveraging is not done. As you can see, it has barely begun."

I kept trying to run for the train today and of course missed it every time. This is a reference to making your time, well, your time. Many things got in my way as I tried to hurry up. "You can not dance faster than the music." Russian saying from Dongoro.

The market seems to be just marking time right now. Almost even between green up alerts and orange down alerts. Small bias towards the orange. Have patience and let the market show its' time.

Despite all the "maths" using indicators and models for the market there are only three things of real importance. Price, volume and time.

Thank you for your time.
